Child Health and Disability Prevention is a Riverside County medical referral resource for children (birth - 18 years without Medi-Cal, birth - 20 years with Medi-Cal) or without insurance.

Childhood Asthma Program

This program is designed to assist families of children with asthma, birth through 18 years old. Parents are taught to identify and control asthma triggers in the home as well as how to use and administer prescribed medications. Call for specific information.

Healthy Families

1 (800) 880-5305 or residents of the Val Verde Unified School District may pick up applications at any of the schools in the district. Assistance in completing the applications is also available.

This program provides a means whereby low cost health, dental, and vision insurance may be obtained for children. Eligibility is based on income and family size. Charges range from $4 to $27 per month for coverage. Telephone assistance is available in various languages.

For Kaiser Permanente subscribers, this center has a number of programs available. Videos, books, and cd's are sold. Pamphlets, videos, and books related to various health conditions are offered, some without charge. Hours are M-F 8:45 am - 4:45 pm (closed for lunch from 12:30-1:30 pm).

Riverside County Health Services Agency (Health Information)

This is a great resource for obtaining information about various programs available in the county. This agency can often direct people to sources of assistance. Birth/Death certificates as well as answers to health-related questions can also be requested through this agency. Cases of food poisoning can be reported through this agency. Programs available include:

Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) is structured to develop a comprehensive case management program for pregnant and parenting adolescents, their parents, and their families through coordinated community services. Counseling is designed to assist in reducing the number of low birth weight babies, keep pregnant and parenting adolescents in school, reduce repeat pregnancies, and insure healthy parents and babies. Black Infant Health Program (BIH) - The basic goal of this program is to maximize positive pregnancy outcomes for African American women and to improve infant survival and assure optimal growth and development for high risk African American Infants. The primary objective is to identify black women who are pregnant or at risk of becoming pregnant into early and continuous prenatal care. (951) 358-5250.

California Children Services (CCS) provide financial assistance, case management and therapy services to children with certain complex, chronic physically handicapping illness. Specialized medical care is provided at approved hospitals and at private clinics by approved medical specialists. Physical and occupational therapy are provided to handicapped children in Medical Therapy Units located in public schools. For information call (951) 358-5401.

Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) and Treatment Programs (CHDP-TP) staff identify children with health problems/needs that have not been recognized or fully cared for and ensure such problems are adequately diagnosed and treated. For information call (951) 358-5481 or 1 (800) 346-6520.

Prenatal Care Guidance Program (PCG), another component of CHDP, provides direction and advocacy for prenatal clients. Located at the corner of Indiana & Washington in Riverside. Open Monday -Friday 7:30a.m.-6p.m. Closed weekends and holidays- Accepts Medi-Cal, MISP or Exclusive Care (both county plans), or private insurance. Fees are on a sliding scale based on income for others. It's OK to just go in. The wait is shorter here than going to the Riverside County Regional Medical Center for urgent care.
