Braille Institute

Among other services, this agency publishes three catalogs a year & eligible children are allowed to choose three or four free children's Braille books from each catalog. These need to be requested for individual children - it's to encourage the use of Braille & to help these children build their own libraries. I understand that the Harry Potter series is available at times.

This is an access number for families of or people working with those who are both deaf and blind (& who are not more than 21 years old). They will provide information, education/training, and technical assistance to those working with a person so handicapped. Se habla español. Large print materials, Braille materials, and some videotapes (in American Sign Language for young children) designed for children in grades K - 8 are available through this agency. These materials are all free of charge for public schools in California . Go to the website and follow directions to order.

Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic: Learning Through Listening

This is a great source for textbooks (kindergarten - professional level) for those with learning disabilities and/or vision impairments. These materials are loaned to eligible individuals for $100.00 for 1st year, $35.00/year thereafter. There are over 93,000 books available and they may be borrowed for one-year then renewed if appropriate. About 20,000 books are available on cd's. Recorders for use with tapes provided by this agency can be borrowed from the "Talking Books" organization.
